Information and Communication Directorate

The directorate contributes to the goal of bringing the AU closer to the African people and positioning the AU as a people centred union through the development and dissemination of communication to foster better understanding of the mandates of the AU and its key programmes aimed at promoting Africa’s growth and development. The directorate acts as the Commission’s spokesperson and develops outreach and advocacy programmes.The key roles of the directorate are to:

  • Develop and implement corporate communication programmes for the AU
  • Promote Agenda 2063 and its priority projects
  • Manage and protect the AU brand identity and ensure the correct use of AU iconography in all communication.
  • Manage the official communication channels of the AU including its digital platforms (website, corporate social media channels, corporate mobile applications), the AU Media Centre and the AU Studio.
  • Provide coverage of AU activities at the HQ and in the field
  • Liaise with regional and international media to promote awareness of the AU
  • Review credentials and accredit media to the African Union
  • Organise site visits and tours to the AU Headquarters in Addis Ababa
  • Liaise with key regional media partners and associations to promote Africa’s development Agenda
  • Coordinates the implementation of decisions on communication by the STC on Communication & ICT
  • Work with development partners to  enhance skills and competencies through implementation of capacity building programmes for the African media
